Why do non Catholic Christians say that going to confession is wrong?

I am a Lutheran (LC-MS) and a former Catholic. While we don't believe that we are required to "go to confession" we do believe we need to confess our sins to God. Also we do have private confession with our pastor when and if we choose, but it's not required.
