What happens to do the dogs put down by the pound?

I am not sure what happens to them in the U.S.A., I know in many Eastern countries they can be recycled as dog meat and that way you don't waste resources. I heard that the U.S.A. just burn the dogs, seems like a huge waste. Can anyone tell me if the pound will sell dead dogs instead of wasting it?
