I have and rat issue with my Chikens' food?

I have s small flock of chickens, however my yard seems to have a rat problem. I keep the chickens and their food in the coop at night but the rats always come back, They are drastically eating all the food. I need to know how to get rid of the rats without harming the chickens (there are too many rats for traps)
