Do people feel a need to flock to God to find themselves, or?

Do they do it in attempt to get away from themselves, and possibly even the world around them? If the latter case is true, is this not a sophisticated form of nihilism? If you can appreciate yourself and reality in a demonstrative sense, then it would seem that there would be little need to flock to a god, religion, cult, or whatever the case may be.
